Glossary of Watch Terms
This glossary provides clear definitions of commonly used luxury watch terms to help buyers and collectors better understand product descriptions and technical language.
Reference Number
A manufacturer-assigned identifier that defines a watch’s model, materials, size, and configuration.
Serial Number
A production identifier assigned during manufacturing. Serial numbers may indicate approximate production period but do not define the model itself.
Case
The external housing of the watch that contains the movement. Typically made of steel, gold, titanium, ceramic, or platinum.
Movement
The internal mechanical or quartz mechanism that powers the watch. Movements may be manual-wind, automatic, or quartz.
Automatic (Self-Winding)
A mechanical movement that winds itself through wrist motion via a rotating rotor.
Manual-Wind
A mechanical movement that must be wound by turning the crown.
Complication
Any function beyond basic timekeeping, such as date, chronograph, moonphase, or tourbillon.
Chronograph
A stopwatch function integrated into the watch, typically operated by pushers on the case.
Dial
The face of the watch displaying time and complications. Also referred to as the watch “face.”
Bezel
The ring surrounding the crystal. May be fixed or rotating and made from metal, ceramic, or other materials.
Crystal
The transparent cover protecting the dial. Common materials include sapphire and acrylic.
Bracelet
A metal band attached to the watch case.
Strap
A non-metal band, typically leather, rubber, or fabric.
Rehaut
The inner bezel between the dial and crystal, commonly used by Rolex for engravings.
Caseback
The rear portion of the watch case. May be solid or exhibition (transparent).
Exhibition Caseback
A transparent caseback allowing visibility of the movement.
Patina
Natural aging that occurs on dials, hands, or lume over time, often valued by collectors.
Lume
Luminous material applied to hands or markers for visibility in low light.
Box & Papers
Original manufacturer packaging and documentation accompanying the watch.
Aftermarket
Any component not installed by the original manufacturer.
Vintage
Generally refers to watches produced several decades ago, often with discontinued references or designs.
Pre-Owned
A watch that has had at least one previous owner.
